Get Your Brain Care Score and Boost Longevity

Brain Care Score

The brain is the control center of the body, managing a wide range of vital functions essential for survival and quality of life. It’s a complex organ without which we cannot function and upon which our longevity depends.

So how can we evaluate our brain health to help prevent dementia and other neurological conditions? Enter the McCance Brain Care Score, a 21-point assessment tool developed by Dr. Jonathan Rosand and colleagues at Massachusetts General Hospital’s McCance Center for Brain Health.

Paying attention to your Brain Care Score is vital because it provides a clear, actionable snapshot of your brain health and highlights areas you can improve to reduce the risks of stroke, dementia, and depression.

What Does the Brain Care Score Evaluate?

The assessment evaluates 12 factors across physical, lifestyle, and social-emotional domains to help individuals identify and modify risks associated with brain conditions.

A high score reflects healthy choices in physical, lifestyle, and emotional well-being, which not only protect your brain but also lower the risk of heart disease, certain cancers, and overall mortality. Tracking your brain health empowers you to make proactive changes that enhance both your mental and physical quality of life.

Physical Factors:

Lifestyle Factors:

Social-Emotional Factors:

Each factor is scored from 0 to 2, with a maximum possible score of 21. Higher scores indicate better brain care. A study involving nearly 400,000 adults aged 40 to 69, published in Frontiers in Neurology found that higher initial scores correlated with lower risks of developing strokes or dementia over an average follow-up of 12.5 years.

The benefits of a higher Brain Care Score were more pronounced in people under 50, but significant advantages were also observed in older age groups. For example, among participants in their 60s, a five-point higher score was associated with a 33% reduced risk of stroke. Additionally, subsequent research indicated that higher scores corresponded with a lower risk of depression over time.

Lifestyle Changes for Longevity

It’s recommended that you revisit the quiz annually or whenever you make significant lifestyle changes. Regular check-ins allow you to monitor your progress, adapt strategies, and stay motivated.

Over time, even small improvements—like better sleep habits or managing stress—can lead to meaningful health benefits. By making brain care a priority, you’re investing in your longevity, leading to a healthier, longer, and more fulfilling life.

Additionally, implementing changes to improve your Brain Care Score can have benefits beyond brain health. The same factors that enhance brain health are linked to lower risks of heart disease, heart failure, and certain cancers, including lung, breast, and colon cancers. As Dr. Rosand notes, “Take care of your brain, and the rest of your body will follow.”

As Health Insiders are aware, knowledge is power. The McCance Brain Care Score offers a practical framework for assessing and improving key factors that influence your brain health. By focusing on improving each element, you can take proactive steps to increase your overall health and longevity by reducing your risk of stroke, dementia, and depression.
