It’s one of the most persistent frustrations in modern health: you do everything right, you dim the lights, put your phone away, keep the room cool, and you still lie awake at 3am staring at the ceiling.
For millions of Canadians, that scenario is a regular occurrence. About 48% of Canadian adults report some form of trouble sleeping, and roughly 16.3% meet the full clinical criteria for insomnia disorder, about 5 million people. Among women aged 18 to 64, insomnia symptoms have increased by nearly 25% since 2007.
The conventional advice including sleep hygiene, reduced screens, consistent bedtimes, remains valid. But a growing body of research suggests we’ve been overlooking something: the trillions of bacteria living in our digestive system may be playing a significant role in how well we sleep.
The Gut-Brain Connection
Your gut and your brain are in constant communication through a network of nerves, hormones, and chemical signals known as the gut-brain axis. This isn’t a metaphor. It’s a documented physiological pathway that researchers are only beginning to fully understand.
What’s becoming clear is that the microbes living in your gut produce and regulate many of the same chemicals that govern your sleep-wake cycles. Specific bacteria, particularly from the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium families, are involved in the production of serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), two neurotransmitters that play a central role in relaxation and sleep. Your gut actually produces roughly 90% of the body’s serotonin, which is then converted into melatonin, the hormone that signals your body it’s time to sleep.
The relationship goes in both directions. Sleep deprivation has been shown to reduce the abundance of beneficial gut bacteria, creating a cycle where poor sleep worsens the microbiome, and a disrupted microbiome further impairs sleep.
What the Research Actually Shows
A comprehensive review published in Brain Medicine in November 2025, synthesizing research from teams across China and the United States, confirmed the gut microbiome as a significant factor in sleep regulation, operating through immune signaling, neurotransmitter production, and direct nerve pathways.
A 2024 review in Open Life Sciences found that gut bacteria influence sleep through several mechanisms: by producing short-chain fatty acids that reduce inflammation and support nervous system function, by modulating the immune system’s role in sleep signalling, and through the vagus nerve, the long nerve that runs from the brainstem directly to the gut and carries signals in both directions.
Importantly, this research is still emerging. Most studies to date have been relatively small, and researchers are careful to note that the field hasn’t yet established clear protocols for clinical treatment. What we can say is that the relationship is real, bidirectional, and increasingly well-documented.
What Diet Has to Do With It
Your gut microbiome is shaped largely by what you eat, and what you eat appears to influence sleep in measurable ways.
A 2025 randomized controlled trial published in Scientific Reports looked specifically at the MIND diet, a combination of the Mediterranean and DASH dietary patterns emphasizing leafy greens, berries, nuts, whole grains, fatty fish, and legumes, in 44 diabetic women with insomnia. After 12 weeks, the MIND diet group showed significantly greater improvements in sleep quality, sleep latency (time to fall asleep), and sleep duration compared to the control group. They also saw reductions in cortisol (a stress hormone linked to disrupted sleep) and increases in BDNF, a brain protein involved in mood and cognitive function.
The researchers point to specific mechanisms: magnesium from leafy greens acts as a GABA agonist and helps regulate melatonin production, while the polyphenols in berries reduce inflammation in ways that may protect the brain’s sleep architecture. It’s worth noting this was a small, single-country study conducted in Iran, so the results are promising but can’t yet be generalized to all populations.
A separate large-scale analysis using U.S. national health data from 2007 to 2020, published in Frontiers in Nutrition in 2025, found that people with diabetes were significantly more likely to experience insomnia, sleep disorders, and abnormal sleep duration. It also found that dietary protein intake was consistently linked to better sleep across all glycemic groups, with those eating low-protein diets more likely to report disordered sleep.
Practical Steps Worth Trying
The science doesn’t yet support a specific “gut protocol” for sleep. But the underlying research does point toward several evidence-informed dietary changes that may support both gut health and sleep quality:
Increase dietary fibre. Fibre feeds beneficial gut bacteria, including the strains most associated with serotonin and GABA production. Legumes, whole grains, vegetables, and fruit are your best sources.
Consider kiwifruit or tart cherry juice as an evening snack. Both have been studied specifically in the context of sleep. Kiwifruit contains serotonin precursors and antioxidants that small studies have linked to improvements in sleep onset and duration. Tart cherry juice is one of the few food sources of melatonin itself.
Prioritize protein at meals. As the Frontiers in Nutrition analysis found, adequate protein intake is consistently associated with better sleep outcomes. Tryptophan, an amino acid found in turkey, eggs, dairy, seeds, and legumes, is a precursor to both serotonin and melatonin.
Limit high-saturated-fat meals late in the day. Research has linked high saturated fat intake to reduced slow-wave sleep, the deep, restorative phase. Fatty, heavy meals close to bedtime appear to fragment sleep rather than deepen it.
Eat more consistently. Meal timing matters for circadian rhythms. The internal clocks that regulate both your gut bacteria and your sleep-wake cycles run partly on feeding cues, and erratic eating patterns can throw off both systems.
A Note of Caution
This is a field where the popular press tends to outrun the evidence, and your inbox is probably already full of probiotic and supplement products making outsized sleep claims. The honest answer is that while specific bacterial strains like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species are linked to better sleep in research settings, the commercial probiotic products widely available in Canada have not been rigorously tested for this specific purpose, and the evidence for individual sleep supplements remains thin.
What the research does consistently support is the value of a varied, plant-forward diet rich in fibre, polyphenols, and adequate protein, not as a magic cure for insomnia, but as a foundation that supports the gut-brain systems involved in sleep.
If your sleep problems are chronic or significantly affecting your quality of life, the most evidence-based first-line treatment remains Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), which Canadian guidelines endorse over long-term sleep medication. Diet may be one more useful piece of the puzzle, but it’s not a replacement for clinical care.
